How Smart E-Commerce Brands Are Rewriting the Rules with AI

A few weeks ago, I was working from The Park Club between meetings—laptop open, coffee in hand, toggling between two very different client calls. One was a high-end luxury consignment brand. The other, a fast-growing health and wellness company.

Different industries. Different customers. Different aesthetics.

But both founders shared the same story—almost word for word.

They had recently heard from new customers who said: “I found you through ChatGPT.”

Not from Google. Not from Instagram. Not from an ad. From AI.

And both founders were equal parts delighted and curious. How did that happen? Why did their brand show up? What did the AI “know” about them? And—most importantly—how could we be intentional about making it happen again?

That conversation has become incredibly common over the last year. There’s a quiet shift happening in e-commerce and digital marketing:

  • Discovery is no longer owned by search engines alone.

  • It’s now shared with AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, and whatever brilliant new system launches next quarter.

  • And the brands that understand this early get a very real advantage.

From Search Engines to Answer Engines

If you read our blog from April 2025 about “AEO vs. SEO: Why It Matters” you’ll learn all about Answer Engine Optimization. Part of this shift is become customers are asking different questions, such as:

  • “What’s the best clean skincare brand for sensitive skin?”

  • “Which resale sites are trustworthy?”

  • “What supplements do founders actually use?”

  • “What bottle should I bring to a dinner party that feels elevated?”

These questions are now answered by AI and give specific curated recommendations.

Which means your brand’s future visibility depends on something new…and it’s something you can design. Let’s dive into our 10-Step AI Discoverability Playbook for E-Commerce Brands

Whether you implement these internally or have a partner handle them, this framework works across platforms:

  • ChatGPT / OpenAI

  • Google Gemini

  • Grok (X)

  • Perplexity

  • and emerging AI search tools

Think of this as your foundation.

STEP 1: Register your site with search platforms

This ensures your site is visible, crawlable, and properly indexed.

set up:

  • Google Search Console

  • Bing Webmaster Tools (important because Bing feeds multiple AI systems)

STEP 2: Add structured data (schema markup)

This gives AI systems A clean, organized context about who you are and what you sell.

USE SCHEMA FOR:

  • Products

  • Reviews

  • Articles

  • FAQs

  • Organization info

3. Submit your brand directly to OpenAI

This allows brands to share official product and company data directly.

OpenAI provides a Product Discovery submission form:

4. Check your robots.txt file

Make sure your website allows crawlers to access key pages.

5. Simplify your site structure

This clarity helps both humans and machines.

Focus on:

  • Clear page titles

  • Logical headings

  • Intuitive categories

  • Strong meta descriptions

  • Product + FAQ schema

6. Write the way customers actually speak

AI models learn from human language patterns. Meet them where they are.

Here is an example… “What is a good daily probiotic for gut health?”

7. Publish where AI already learns

This is also where press releases become incredibly powerful. When your brand is featured or announced through syndicated press distribution, your story can appear across hundreds of news sites—creating exactly the type of structured, third-party credibility AI platforms trust.

ai systems pull from trusted third-party sources, including:

  • Reddit

  • Quora

  • Medium

  • Wikipedia (when appropriate)

  • Podcasts

  • Interviews

  • And digital media outlets

8. Expand your digital footprint (intentionally)

This includes a robust FAQ page on your website with real customer questions being answered in addition to blogs, reviews, podcast appearances, etc.

9. Create a Brand GPT

You can build a custom assistant for your company here: https://chatgpt.com/gpts

It becomes a digital product expert inside ChatGPT that understands your brand voice, products, and positioning.

10. Optimize your visuals

AI reads images too. Which means that your visuals should tell a story—not just look beautiful.

Try to use descriptive file names, alt text, and contextual product descriptions

Why This Works Across Industries

When your brand’s data, content, messaging, and third-party presence align, AI systems can confidently recommend you…AND…that happens repeatedly, growth becomes something you build…and you’re “found” on open ai platforms more often.

Back to the beginning…Luxury consignment and wellness brands may look different on the surface. But structurally, they’re the same:

  • Trust matters

  • Education matters

  • Positioning matters

  • Clarity matters

  • Consistency matters

The Real Advantage

The most successful e-commerce brands right now are building systems that:

  • Compound

  • Reinforce credibility

  • Create discoverabilities

  • And scale quietly in the background

A Final Thought

That moment when you hear: “I found you on ChatGPT” is exciting! It’s part surprise. Part validation. Part “oh wow… the future is already here.” AI discovery isn’t coming. It’s here.

And the brands that design for it thoughtfully will enjoy years of momentum.
